A contributory parent visa takes about fifteen years. A non contributory one, about thirty three. No other application a family makes lasts that long, and most of the damage happens quietly in the middle years. This is the system we use so that nothing is missed, and so the family always knows where the file stands.
Lodging is the easy part. These are the failures we see when families come to us with an application someone else prepared, or one they lodged themselves years ago.
Every parent visa matter at Skyline runs through the same five phases. The dates below are typical for a contributory application lodged in 2026; a non contributory one simply has a longer phase three.
One consultation, then a written strategy letter. It names the visa, explains why the others were rejected, sets out every cost by year and gives a fixed fee.
The application is prepared so that it is assessed against the core criteria once and queued, with no requests for missing evidence. A queue date is only issued when those criteria are met, so a clean first pass matters.
This is where most applications drift. We keep the file live with a standing annual review and a change of circumstances process, so the Department’s release letter arrives at a current address, to a family that is ready.
When the queue reaches your date the Department asks for fresh health, character and the second instalment, usually with short deadlines. We start this phase before the letter, based on the published release dates.
A permanent parent visa is granted with a travel facility that lasts five years, and the Assurance of Support runs for ten. We stay with the family through both.
Plenty of families lodge parent visas themselves and some do fine. This is the honest difference over a fifteen year matter.
Doing it alone
With Skyline
The visa is chosen from a forum thread or the first agent’s suggestion.
All seven visas are tested against your facts and the choice is explained in writing.
The balance of family test is counted from memory.
Every child is listed with evidence, including the step child in another country.
A change of address is remembered, or not.
An annual review and a change process keep the Department’s record current.
The release letter arrives with 28 day deadlines and nothing prepared.
Health, police, the bond and the second instalment are lined up before the letter.
A visitor visa is applied for online and comes back with 8503.
Visits during the queue are planned so onshore options stay open.
The second instalment is a shock.
It has been forecast every year since lodgement.
The visa, the reasons, the costs by year and the risks, in a letter you can share with the whole family before deciding.
Quoted before work begins and split between lodgement and the final release, so nobody pays fifteen years ahead for work not yet done.
The lawyer who lodges the application is the lawyer who answers the release letter. No handovers to a case officer you have never met.
A tailored checklist, every document in one place, and the Department’s letters filed as they arrive.
One email a year from us, one reply from you. Addresses, passports, sponsor, health, and the current queue position.
If the numbers say a parent will be 92 on release day, we will say so, and we will show you the onshore alternative if there is one.
Parent visas involve long queues, large sums and real trade offs. We compare the pathways honestly, put the plan in writing, and stay on the file for as long as it takes.
One meeting, by phone, video or at 470 St Kilda Road, Melbourne. You leave with the visa named, the costs by year and a fixed fee in writing. If a parent visa is not the right move yet, we will tell you that too.
